K-8 Mathematics Workshop for Teachers

Georgia Standards of Excellence Workshop Series for K-8 Math

The Georgia Standards of Excellence workshops at UGA Griffin Campus are designed to promote professional development for Georgia teachers of mathematics in K-8 content areas and will focus on content and pedagogies from the Georgia Standards of Excellence found in the Math and Parent Partners Curriculum. These strengthening workshops expose you to current “best” pedagogical practices and strategies which will enrich your math instruction and make a significant difference in your students’ performance. The workshop content also puts you in position to teach K-8 parents who participate in the University of Georgia Math and Parent Partnership program. You get a brief overview of the M.Ed. and Ed.S. programs at UGA and one (1) hour (EMAT 6000 credit) of credit with full day participation and enrollment in one of the degree programs. PLU hours are also available. You may contact Andrea Knapp for additional questions: akknapp@uga.edu or 309-287-2373. Lunch is included for participants attending both workshop sessions.

Saturday, June 3, 2017- Geometry for the Classroom

Instructor: Dr. Andrea Knapp
Location: Student Learning Center, UGA Griffin Campus

Time: First Session: 9am - 12 Noon
This workshop session gives participants experience and teaching insights with geometry of the schools. Participants discover and explore geometrical concepts using a variety of hands-on materials and activities. Examples of materials and concepts are: (1) pattern blocks – comparing angles; (2) paper folding – area, parallel lines, symmetry and congruency; (3) geoboards – areas of triangles, squares, parallelograms and the Pythagorean Theorem; and (4) cylinders, cubes, cones – to discover volume formulas. Participants construct a “walk-in size” icosahedron using dowels and plastic connectors; you create original shapes that illustrate geometric ideas. Emphasis is on helping participants continue to be reminded of and better understand exactly how children learn geometry.

Time: Second Session: 1pm - 4pm
This workshop session builds on the First Session on June 3rd.

Fee: $49 for session 1 OR 2

Fee for both sessions (1 & 2- full day): $79
